This unique sculpture portrays a woman in an aqua top with a rust color skirt and headwrap, reading a book and carrying a water pot as she walks. A small group of talented metal casting artisans in Burkina Faso cast their sculptures from recycled metal using a lost-wax casting process. First, the sculpture is carved in beeswax. Next, a clay mold is formed around it, and then the wax is melted away, leaving a void to fill with molten bronze. Each sculpture bears unique characteristics that reveal the handmade nature of its creation.
