Whether as a wall decoration, organizing tray or for serving warm bread, this basket is both elegant and functional. Named the "Chumil," basket after the Kaqchikel word for "star," it is skillfully woven from longleaf pine needles, pajón (a native grass in Guatemala), and raffia, with a central star design rendered in shades of green. Mayan Hands is a fair-trade nonprofit dedicated to providing economic and educational opportunities to Maya women and girls, so that they can build sustainable futures for themselves, their families and communities, as they continue to live within the culture they cherish.
